1922, Ottoman Empire has remained intact. The name of Sultan has reached the 21st century and tradition lived on. Over time modern ways started to shape the country with the influence from the west. High-rise buildings were erected, Education has been tamed and made safer for kids, the nightlife and younger public started thriving, live music can be heard in the spicy air surrounding restaurants. However, just like many countries, it is divided by Class, Religion, and economical status. Behind the astonishing facade, there is a dark beast in the underbelly not seen by many.

These are the rundown streets that are so infamous even taxi drivers refuse to step in, they are dangerous for ordinary to go. It is a different world with its traditions and culture surrounding it since they have been shunned by the “upperclassmen” for many years. It is a world of violence to some, but to people who have the courage to live there, it is a place of warmth and community. Walking down these streets, an atmosphere forms with ruined buildings, barely any greenery to be seen, distant sounds of what might be a gun or a firecracker, and the most vividly sound of Rap music as well as the strong scents coming from kebab stores and houses that pop up on the sidelines. As time went by, the popularity of these elements of street culture has risen.

They made their way into many people’s lives because of individuals who come out of there and told their story, or the social awareness that has been more rampant among the youth, it has become a staple of among millions.
However, the Fashion industry refuses to see the special creativity this part of the culture brings, because of its dirty and obscene look because of the street’s image as being sinful. But what if the aesthetics of the streets had combined with the ottoman look?
What would Ottoman street fashion look like?

Patterns in Ottoman empire was one of the main crafts that was considered a very important task.
Back in the day, especially in the era of Sulieman the Magnificent, this craft especially boomed since during his reign. He put a lot of emphasis on art, as the sultan himself was a jewelry maker.

This craft was called Ebru, It is achieved by sprinkling, dropping, and brushing paint on to a pan of oily water and then dipping paper into it.
These are especially famous for their tulip designs.  The more modern version of this craft would be hydrodipping. A series of abstract patterns were created with layering spray paint and spices. These were then scanned and vectorized to create a silkscreen. With the help of various spices, these being paprika, kurkuma, cumin and black pepper, a natrual textile dye was created thus bringing not only the look of the times but also the smell, creating a different dimension to the outfit.
